Cravath’s New York Office Moves to Two Manhattan West
“My first rotation was in finance, where I worked mostly on bond deals, but also worked on credit facilities and IPOs. My first rotation in capital markets was a great way to just learn about how businesses are run, what their growth drivers are, and what risks they face as we consider appropriate disclosure.
After that, I spent a little over a year in an M&A rotation, where I did some big public deals. I also got the chance to be the lead associate on a smaller acquisition, which was an amazing experience as a second year. It was a huge responsibility, and it helped crystallize everything I had already learned.
Then I went to our London office, where I stayed for two years for another capital markets rotation focusing on secured high-yield bond offerings for European issuers, as well as SEC work for public clients. That was a transformative experience, particularly because in Europe business is done very much in person. It was fantastic at that point in my career to regularly work with clients face to face, build the related soft skillset, and have the opportunity to start lasting relationships.
When I returned to New York, I spent almost two and a half years in another M&A group. I gained a broad variety of experience: large public and private deals, a proxy fight, joint ventures, and complex investments.
My final rotation was in banking, which I began shortly before I was elected partner, and it was a great example of the Cravath System at work; I received incredible mentorship and was able to draw on my prior training in finance to hone my skills in the leveraged finance market.
I think the rotation system gives Cravath lawyers a broad base of experience to bring to bear in novel situations, and it also teaches us early on to collaborate at all levels. The collaborative spirit of the Firm makes work a pleasure, and it also allows us to deliver the best legal advice with the full resources of the Firm behind it.”
