Cravath’s New York Office Moves to Two Manhattan West
Stephen S. Madsen retired from Cravath’s Litigation Department in December 2012.
His practice focused on antitrust; securities fraud; trade secrets; and patent litigation; commercial disputes; and creditor representation in bankruptcy proceedings. Further, he amassed substantial experience leading internal investigations, both under the auspices of independent committees of Boards of Directors and in connection with regulatory proceedings involving such agencies as the Justice Department, various State Attorneys General, the SEC, the NYSE and FINRA, covering such areas as off‑label marketing of pharmaceuticals, mutual fund market timing, alleged anticompetitive conduct, alleged senior executive misconduct and other matters. Mr. Madsen is also highly experienced in the field of arbitration, having handled disputes under ICC, UNCITRAL, AAA and ad hoc rules.
Mr. Madsen was born in Spokane, Washington and raised near Cleveland, Ohio. He received an A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1973 and a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1980, where he was a Stone Scholar and Writing and Research Editor of the Law Review. After a clerkship with Hon. Amalya L. Kearse of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Mr. Madsen joined Cravath in 1981 and became a partner in 1988.

He received an A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1973 and a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1980, where he was a Stone Scholar and Writing and Research Editor of the Law Review.
