On January 29, 2011, Alpha Natural Resources (“Alpha”) and Massey Energy Company (“Massey”) announced that they have executed a definitive agreement under which Alpha will acquire all outstanding shares of Massey common stock in a transaction with an $8.5 billion enterprise value for Massey. Cravath represented Massey in connection with this transaction. The boards of directors of Alpha and Massey have each approved the terms of the definitive merger agreement, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including approval by the stockholders of both companies.

On October 10, 2023, following a full trial on the merits and an appeal to the Delaware Supreme Court, Cravath client The Williams Companies, Inc. (“Williams”) secured a victory resulting in a judgment of more than $600 million.
